Say you've staked $2,000 across 40 bets and you're sitting on $400 profit. That's a 20% ROI. Sounds great. But the 95% confidence interval on 40 bets at that win rate is massive — we're talking anywhere from roughly -8% to +48% ROI being statistically consistent with your results.
In plain English: your 20% ROI is completely indistinguishable from random chance at this sample size. You might be brilliant. You might be lucky. The data literally cannot tell you which.
This isn't meant to be demoralising — it's meant to be clarifying. Because once you understand this, you stop making the critical mistake of scaling up during a hot streak before you've earned the right to.
So When Does Skill Actually Show Up?
Skill-based edges in betting tend to have a few distinguishing characteristics worth looking for.
Consistency across different conditions. A genuine edge holds up whether you're betting on a Thursday night game or a Sunday afternoon fixture, in-form teams or struggling ones. If your system only seems to work in very specific circumstances, that's a red flag.
A logical reason it should work. Pure data mining — finding patterns in historical results without understanding why those patterns exist — is one of the fastest ways to fool yourself. Markets adjust. If your edge is "teams wearing dark jerseys win 58% of the time in wet weather," you're in trouble. If your edge is "public money consistently overvalues home advantage in AFL finals because of crowd noise factors that are quantifiably smaller in modern stadiums," you've got something to work with.
Positive expected value at the time of the bet. This is the big one. A winning bet isn't necessarily a good bet, and a losing bet isn't necessarily a bad one. What matters is whether the odds you got were above the true probability of the outcome. If you backed a horse at $4.50 that had a genuine 30% chance of winning, that's a good bet — whether it wins or loses. Good process over good outcomes.
The Checklist Before You Trust Your Streak
Before you start treating your current run as evidence of a working system, run through these honestly:
- Sample size: Do you have at least 200 bets in similar conditions? If not, your results are largely noise.
- Record keeping: Are you tracking every bet, including the ones you'd rather forget? Cherry-picked records are useless.
- Odds quality: Were you consistently getting value, or were you just backing winners at short prices?
- Repeatability: Can you write down the exact criteria for your bets before placing them, or are you rationalising after the fact?
